Sudan Reaffirms Full Cooperation with UN on Promotion and Protection of Human Rights

Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris affirmed that upholding and promoting fundamental human rights principles is an integral part of Sudanese society, rooted in the country’s religious teachings, cultural heritage, and social and ethical values. He affirmed Sudan’s readiness to fully cooperate with the United Nations and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in promoting and advancing human rights principles in a manner consistent with Sudan’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
The Prime Minister made the remarks during a meeting in Khartoum on Tuesday with the UN Designated Expert on human rights in Sudan, Radhouane Nouicer, and his accompanying delegation.
The Prime Minister said Sudan would work with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the basis of complementarity and joint action, particularly in monitoring, follow-up and verification, as well as technical cooperation and training. He noted that the war in Sudan, which he said is approaching its end, had created major challenges, particularly in light of the grave atrocities and unprecedented crimes committed by the rebel militia against civilians.
Professor Kamil Idris said Sudan would work to restore the social fabric to its former strength through efforts to promote security and social peace, in cooperation with friends and international partners.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed his full confidence in the valued efforts of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, whose mandate has been renewed for another term, as well as in the efforts of the Independent Expert, directing relevant state institutions to cooperate with him.
