Foreign Minister Briefs UN Human Rights Chief on RSF Militia Crimes
On the sidelines of the special session of the Human Rights Council on the situation in and around El-Obeid, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salem, met with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Volker Türk and his senior aides.
The Foreign Minister outlined the crimes committed by the terrorist Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and its continued attacks against civilians, with particular emphasis on its recent assault on the city of El-Obeid.
He also presented the Government's vision for dismantling the terrorist militia and holding its members accountable, calling for its swift designation as a terrorist organization. The Minister further reaffirmed the Sudanese Government's continued cooperation with the UN human rights mechanisms operating in the country, including the UN Human Rights Country Office in Sudan and the designated expert on the human rights situation in Sudan.
The Minister also addressed the involvement of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in supporting the militia through a sustained supply of weapons, foreign mercenaries, and strategic drones that are now being used to attack the city of El-Obeid.
For his part, High Commissioner Volker Türk expressed appreciation for the Sudanese Government's cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms. He referred to his recent visit to Sudan and the facilitation provided by the Government, including meetings with senior officials and a field visit to Al-Affadh Camp for displaced persons (IDPs) from El-Fasher in Northern State.
Türk also affirmed that the Office of the High Commissioner would continue its work through its office in Sudan to monitor crimes and human rights violations and to support efforts aimed at preventing a recurrence of the atrocities committed by the RSF militia during its assault on El-Fasher in any other part of the country.
