The Republic of Sudan
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Office of the Spokesperson and Media Directorate
Press Statement
The Government of Sudan welcomes the Russian Federation’s use of its veto power in the UN Security Council today to block the unbalanced British draft resolution on Sudan. Russia’s stance, which upholds the principles of justice, state sovereignty, and international law, while supporting Sudan’s independence, unity, and national institutions, is highly commendable.
The Government hopes that this historic precedent will mark an end to the misuse of the Security Council as a tool for hegemony over nations, serving the narrow interests of specific powers, disregarding transparency and democratic values, and perpetuating double standards. Such practices weaken the Council’s ability to fulfill its primary mandate of maintaining international peace and security.
